Job Summary:
The Source Water Protection Program is used to assist rural and small communities served by public water systems to reduce or eliminate the potential risks to drinking water supplies through the development of Source Water Protection Plans and providing assistance to entities for the implementation of contamination prevention measures.
Position Responsibilities:
  1. Source Water Specialists are to develop and implement a plan to address state-specific source water protection needs of rural and small community water systems in the state.
  2. Provide assistance and support in facilitating the implementation of source water protection plans.
  3. Facilitate and mediate planning meetings between various cross-jurisdictional entities.
  4. Provide assistance and support in source water protection planning.
  5. Provide presentations and assistance to local officials, community groups, and others.
  6. Attend NRWA in-service training sessions.
  7. Write reports and develop informational articles for dissemination.
  8. Respond to inquiries from facilities, consumers, governmental agencies, and others regarding technical matters.
  9. Serve as a liaison to create better coordination, communication and collaboration between rural and small community multi-jurisdictional entities and local, county, state and federal agencies.
  10. Complete and submit the require reporting as scheduled.
  11. Have 300 hours of on-site at systems.
  12. Have 5 completed and implemented Source Water Protection Plans.
  13. Complete daily logs.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in public or environmental health, a related science field, or equivalent, with at least 24 hours in a physical, natural, or biological science, chemistry, geology, hydrology, physical geography, environmental science, environmental health, or civil, agricultural, environmental, geological, or chemical engineering, OR a high school diploma or equivalent.   At least 5 year’s experience in the water and/or wastewater industry is preferred.
  • “C” level Certified Water or Wastewater Works Operator License or higher, current and unexpired / unrestricted, issued by the DEQ, or the ability to obtain such a license within the first 2 years of employment.
  • A valid Oklahoma driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • A positive attitude, professional demeanor, ability to work well in a team environment or independently, excellent time management and problems solving skills, and possessing self-motivation.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to walk long distances or spend long hours on their feet.
  • Must be able to walk over a variety of terrain, such as loose gravel, slopes, excavated areas, and construction sites.
  • Must be able to climb ladders or stairs.
  • Must be able to carry equipment or supplies up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to handle extremes of heat or cold and inclement weather.
  • May occasionally be exposed to strong odors and may face short-term exposure to pollutants such as air-borne toxics.
