JOB SUMMARY:
Under general direction, responsible for the operation and maintenance of the water treatment plant and related equipment; to ensure compliance with permit requirements; to ensure work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures; and to perform the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES:
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:
1. Perform the more technical and complex tasks, including interpreting results of laboratory tests to make operational adjustments, pump settings, chemical feed settings and other necessary changes to maintain compliance with State and Federal regulations.
2. Conduct chemical and microbiological tests and sampling of raw and treated water; prepare test solutions; record test results; prepare monthly reports.
3. Perform preventive and emergency maintenance and repairs to all mechanical, electrical and piping components related to the treatment plant and pump stations; maintain surrounding buildings and grounds.
4. Perform daily plant checks to discover and troubleshoot mechanical problems.
5. Maintain inventory of chemicals, lubricants and spare parts/equipment necessary for pumping and treatment operations; order supplies as needed.
6. Clean and maintain equipment, tanks and other work areas.
7. Ensure safety standards are met.
8. Effectively working and cooperating with supervisors, co-workers and clients.
9. Following the direction of supervisors.
10. Refraining from causing or contributing to disruption in the workplace.
11. Other duties as may be assigned by supervisors.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both inside and outside environments.
Operations include working in confined spaces and working with machinery, electricity, equipment and laboratory chemicals.
Exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, potentially hazardous chemicals; work in or with water; walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.
Employee may be subject to heavy lifting requirements up to 50 pounds.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills
• Comprehensive knowledge of operations, services and activities of a municipal water treatment program.
• Knowledge of methods and techniques of conducting laboratory tests and procedures related to water treatment analysis.
• Knowledge of tools, equipment and procedures used in the operation and maintenance of water treatments and pumping facilities.
• Knowledge of emergency maintenance and repair procedures related to water treatment facilities.
• Ability to diagnose operational problems and perform effective maintenance on equipment.
• Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
• Ability to perform computer operations for tracking purposes and report generation.
• Maintain a variety of reports, logs, meters and charts on a daily basis to ensure proper operation of the plant.
• Ability to use mowers for routine maintenance of facility grounds.
• Ability to effectively work and cooperate with supervisors, co-workers and clients.
• Ability to follow the directions of supervisors.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Education/Qualifications Required:
• High School diploma or GED supplemented with additional education and experience necessary for successful performance of this job.
• Must possess a Class D Water certificate from the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality.
• Must obtain a Class C water certificate within one year of employment.
• A Class C water lab certification required within two (2) years of employment.
• Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and operation of a water treatment plant and pumping facility.
• Must possess a valid Oklahoma State Driver’s License with driving record free from serious or frequent violations.
