Maintenance Employee

Position Summary

The Maintenance Employee performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, and construction of the City’s public works and utility systems. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining the City’s water treatment plant, water distribution system, wastewater collection and treatment system, natural gas distribution system, streets, sidewalks, storm drainage system, parks, cemetery, signage, and other City-owned facilities and infrastructure. This position operates a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment while providing safe, reliable, and efficient services to the residents and businesses of Kaw City.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Operate, monitor, inspect, and maintain the City’s water treatment plant to ensure compliance with state and federal drinking water regulations.
• Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair the City’s wastewater collection and treatment system, including lift stations, sewer mains, pumps, manholes, and treatment equipment.
• Install, inspect, maintain, and repair the City’s natural gas distribution system, including gas mains, service lines, valves, regulators, meters, and related infrastructure.
• Locate underground utilities and respond to utility locate requests.
• Investigate and repair gas, water, and sewer line breaks and leaks.
• Install, repair, replace, and read water and gas meters.
• Collect water and wastewater samples and maintain required operational records.
• Operate backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, trenchers, mowers, skid steers, and other equipment used in municipal maintenance.
• Perform preventive maintenance on pumps, motors, generators, buildings, and utility equipment.
• Repair and maintain streets, sidewalks, curbs, storm drainage systems, traffic signs, parks, cemetery grounds, and other City property.
• Assist with snow, ice, storm, flood, and other emergency response activities as needed.
• Participate in after-hours on-call rotations and respond to utility emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance, inspections, repairs, equipment operation, and regulatory reporting.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• No previous experience required. Training will be provided.
• Valid Oklahoma driver’s license required.
• Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain required State of Oklahoma certifications for Water Treatment, Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection/Treatment, and Natural Gas operations within the timeframes established by the City.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment.
• Ability to learn water treatment, wastewater treatment, natural gas distribution, and utility maintenance procedures.
• Ability to read maps, utility locates, work orders, and equipment manuals.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Physical Requirements

This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, crawling, lifting, carrying, and working in confined spaces and trenches.

Employees must be able to:

• Lift and carry 50 pounds or more.
• Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Work at heights, in excavations, and around moving machinery.
• Respond to emergencies during evenings, weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours.
