Water Plant Operator
JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for performing functions associated with the control, operation and
maintenance of the drinking water treatment plant and related equipment to ensure compliance
with primary drinking water standards as they apply to public water systems; to ensure work
quality and adherence to established policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES:
The following tasks are typical for this position.
● Perform the more technical and complex tasks, including interpretation of laboratory test
results to make operational adjustments for pump settings, chemical feed settings and
other necessary changes to maintain compliance with State and Federal regulations.
● Conduct water quality tests and sampling of raw and treated water; record test results;
prepare monthly reports.
● Perform preventive and emergency maintenance and repairs to mechanical, electrical
and piping components related to the treatment plant and pump stations; maintain
surrounding buildings and grounds.
● Perform daily plant checks to discover and troubleshoot operational problems.
● Maintain inventory of chemicals, lubricants and spare parts/equipment necessary for
pumping and treatment operations; order supplies as needed.
● Clean and maintain equipment, tanks and other work areas.
● Ensure safety standards are met.
● Effectively working and cooperating with supervisors, co-workers and clients.
● Refraining from causing or contributing to disruption in the workplace.
● Other duties as may be assigned.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both inside and outside environments. Operations include working in confined spaces and working with machinery, electricity,
equipment and laboratory chemicals. Exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gasses, potentially hazardous chemicals; work
in or with water; walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time. Employee may be subject to heavy lifting requirements up to 75 pounds.
Recommended Knowledge, Abilities, Skills:
● Comprehensive knowledge of operations, services and activities involved with a water
treatment facility.
● Knowledge of methods and techniques for conducting laboratory tests and procedures
related to water treatment analysis.
● Proficient use of tools and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of water
treatment and pumping facilities.
● Knowledge of emergency maintenance and repair related to water treatment facilities.
● Ability to diagnose operational problems and perform effective maintenance on
equipment.
● Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State and local regulations related to public water
systems.
● Ability to perform computer operations for tracking purposes and report generation.
● Review and maintain a variety of reports, logs, meters and charts on a daily basis to
ensure proper operation of the plant.
● Ability to use mowers for routine maintenance of facility grounds.
● Ability to effectively work and cooperate with supervisors, co-workers and clients.
● Ability to follow the directions of supervisors.
● Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Education and Qualifications:
● High School diploma or GED supplemented with additional education and experience
necessary for successful performance of this job.
● Obtain Class D Water certification from the Oklahoma Department of Environmental
Quality within six (6) months of hire date.
● Obtain Class C Water certification within one (1) year of obtaining Class D Water
certification.
● Obtain a Class C Water Lab certification within two (2) years of employment.
● Must possess a valid Oklahoma State Driver’s License with driving record free from
serious or frequent violations.
